Samsung Washing Machine Won't Spin
Also shown as: Routes to UE / 5C / dC / 3E
"Won't spin" is three complaints wearing one coat, and they have different fixes — so this page forks before it advises. Samsung's own US guide for this symptom is linked straight from its unbalanced-load section, which tells you where the manufacturer thinks most cases live: the load. But a washer that will not spin because it cannot drain, and a washer whose motor has faulted, are not load problems, and rebalancing laundry at them wastes an afternoon.
The decision sequence
- What it means — pick your fork: A: the spin never starts. B: it spins but too slowly, and clothes come out wet. C: it stops and shows a code. The table below routes each fork; the checks that follow are the shared ones, in Samsung's order.
- Safe to keep running?: Yes for every check on this page — with two exceptions. A burning smell, or a drum that will not turn freely by hand, means stop and skip to the service line.
- The approved checks, in order: Read the code if there is one → redistribute the load → single heavy item gets 2–3 added towels → machine level on a flat, stable surface → door fully latched → run a spin cycle again.
- When to stop: 3E on the display, a grinding noise, or a drum you cannot turn by hand — that is motor or drive territory, and it is a service call, not a load problem.
Safety first
- Let the drum stop completely before opening the door to redistribute a load.
- Burning smell or a jammed drum: unplug the machine and stop. Do not keep retrying the spin.
Common causes
An unbalanced load (UE / Ub)
The most common cause, and Samsung's: the laundry has gathered to one side, so the machine will not risk a high-speed spin. Full procedure on the UE page.
It cannot drain, so it cannot spin (5C)
The trap in this symptom: a washer full of water refuses to spin up. If the drum is holding water, your problem is drainage wearing a spin costume — the won't-drain page is the right sequence.
The door is not latched (dC)
No lock, no spin. If the code is dC, the door family is the fault — see the dC page.
A single heavy item
Samsung UK: single large or heavy items such as bath mats and large towels are unlikely to spin on their own — they have nothing to balance against.
Motor or drive fault (3E)
The serious fork: 3E on the display, grinding, or a drum that resists turning by hand.
Step-by-step checks
- Name your fork, and read any codeCode showing? Ub or UE → balance fork. 5C → drain first. dC → door. 3E → stop line, below. No code → work the shared checks.
- Redistribute the loadSamsung's instruction for the balance family: rearrange the laundry so it is spread evenly around the drum, adding or removing items to balance it.
- Give a single heavy item companySamsung UK's rule for one bath mat, duvet or large towel: add 2–3 additional towels and put on another spin cycle. A lone heavy item cannot balance itself.
- Confirm the machine is level and stableSamsung: make sure the washing machine is on a flat, stable surface. A machine that rocks will unbalance loads that would otherwise spin fine.
- Check the door is fully latchedOpen it, clear anything caught in the seal, and close it firmly. A door that is not detected as locked blocks the spin entirely.
- Run a spin cycle againSamsung UK's closing step for the balance family: put on another spin cycle and watch it. A washer that now spins at speed had a load problem; one that slows or stops again has told you the fork is elsewhere.
When to call a technician
3E displayed, grinding noises, or a drum that will not turn freely by hand: stop — that is the motor/drive family, and Samsung's 3E guidance ends at its support team.
Also book service if the machine spins only when empty but never under any balanced load — once level and load are eliminated, the user's checks are exhausted and what remains is the machine's own balance sensing, which is not a user check.
Model differences
| Your fork | What is happening | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| A — spin never starts, code showing | Ub/UE = balance · 5C = it must drain first · dC = door not locked | UE page · won't-drain page · dC page |
| B — spins too slowly, clothes come out wet | Usually balance limiting: the machine caps the spin speed because the load will not settle — one heavy item is the classic case. | Checks above; the towel rule is the fix most owners miss. |
| C — stops with a code | The code names the fault family; the spin is a bystander. | The code's own page, via the hub. |
Ur is not a fault
If the display shows Ur and the cycle seems to be taking longer, nothing is wrong. Samsung US defines Ur as Unbalanced Load Retry: the washer is going to add more water, try to balance the load, and try the spin again — it extends the cycle, and Samsung says it does not mean there is an issue with your washer. Our UE/Ub page covers the family in full.
One-page checklist — Won't spin
- Fork named: never spins / slow spin / stops with code
- Code read and routed (Ub · 5C · dC · 3E)
- Load redistributed evenly
- Single heavy item given 2–3 towels
- Machine level on a flat, stable surface
- Door fully latched, seal clear
- Spin cycle re-run and watched

Frequently asked questions
The washer spins with small loads but not big ones. Why?
Balance. A large load that bunches to one side trips the unbalanced-load protection, where a small load spreads itself. Redistribute, and check the machine is level on a flat, stable surface — Samsung's two checks for this family.
Clothes come out wet even though it did spin. Is the spin broken?
Usually the machine capped its speed because the load would not balance — fork B. The classic cause is one heavy item; Samsung UK's fix is to add 2–3 towels and run another spin cycle.
The drum is full of water and it won't spin. Which page do I need?
The won't-drain page. A washer that cannot drain will not spin up — drainage is the fault, spin is the symptom. Look for a 5C-family code.
What does Ur mean during a long cycle?
Unbalanced Load Retry — the washer is adding water and retrying the balance itself. Samsung US is explicit that Ur does not mean there is an issue with your washer.
When is won't-spin a service call?
When 3E shows, when there is grinding, or when the drum will not turn freely by hand — the motor/drive fork. Also after level, balanced loads repeatedly fail on a machine that spins fine empty.
